Seniors: Here Are Your Goals for August

Fill out the Common App at commonapp.org.

  • Have a trusted friend/parent/teacher help proof this for you.  Make sure you are not leaving any activities or awards left (unless you have too many and need to prioritize).

Have your Common App essay finished.

  • Yes, you can still revise it, but ideally, you are ready to send in the easy apps to schools with no supplements. Chances are, those schools will be sending back scholarship essays!

Refine the list and determine your ED1 / ED2 / EA plan.

  • You should make visits to your EDI and EDII schools.  Everything else can wait at this point until after the admissions decision.

Map out YOUR OWN calendar of due dates with me that prioritize the order in which you are doing the applications.

  • I recommend doing the easy EA schools, then your ED1, you EAs, your ED2 and RD schools.
  • Doing the ED2 and RD schools over Thanksgiving and Christmas is common in the event you are super busy with school but try to do as much as you can as early as possible!

If you are planning on playing DI, DII or DIII sports in college, fill out the NCAA Clearinghouse paperwork.

If you are planning on submitting a visual art portfolio, go over your potential works to include with your art teachers and any mentors you have.

  • Be sure to have high quality images to include in Slideroom (art app portal).
  • Schedule a portfolio review with National Portfolio Day.  Even if you are not applying to an art school (BFA), this will give you a good idea of the quality of your work and anything you may want to do to improve your portfolio before submission.
  • If you are submitting on Zoom, schedule a practice session with Kelsey or one of my college level associates at Tufts/SMFA. They will have you well prepared.

If you are submitting a music “portfolio” / audition – or theater – work with your music teacher to have a high quality recording and/or video.

Review application requirements with me to see if interviews are required/recommended or if there is anything out of the ordinary you will need to provide (i.e. a graded paper, research precis, a video clip etc.).
